Analysis

What the numbers say

AfD polls 28.5% in Germany (poll-of-polls avg of 5 recent verified polls), up 2.0 points this quarter.

↗ Surging momentum

AfD polls 28.5% in Germany (poll-of-polls avg of 5 verified readings), gaining +2.0 points over the last quarter with a +11.3 point move across the verified window. That places AfD #22 of 56 tracked parties worldwide, with room to climb toward the leading pack.

If AfD can capitalize on current trends, consecutive gains tend to compound through media coverage, donor confidence and bandwagon polling effects. Watch whether the next round of releases confirms the average above 28.5% — a hold above that line would signal consolidation rather than a single-poll outlier, while a second straight quarterly gain would put rivals under severe strategic pressure.

Party profile

AfD: history, ideology and voters

A concise reference on AfD of Germany — where it comes from, what it stands for, and who votes for it.

History

Alternative for Germany (Alternative fur Deutschland, AfD) was founded in February 2013 by economists and journalists, led by Bernd Lucke, as a professors and party opposing eurozone bailouts. It narrowly missed the Bundestag in 2013 but entered the European Parliament in 2014. Angela Merkel and the 2015 decision to admit large numbers of asylum seekers transformed it: Lucke was ousted, Frauke Petry steered the party rightward, and the AfD entered the Bundestag in 2017 with 12.6 percent as the official opposition. Leadership passed through Petry, Jorg Meuthen and others toward the current dual leadership of Alice Weidel and Tino Chrupalla. The party consolidated in eastern state parliaments, winning its first state election in Thuringia in 2024, and achieved a historic breakthrough in the February 2025 federal election with 20.8 percent and second place nationally. Germany and the domestic intelligence service and the classification of parts of the party as extremist, mass protests and a firewall policy by other parties excluding it from coalitions have all failed to dent its rise, and by 2026 it polled in the mid-twenties, first in several eastern states.

Ideology

The AfD blends nationalism, immigration restriction and euroscepticism with ordoliberal economics and climate scepticism. It demands closed borders, deportations on a large scale, an end to asylum as currently practised and the defence of German Leitkultur against multiculturalism and political Islam. On the EU it ranges from reformist to exit-curious, calling for the abolition of the euro, restoration of the Deutschmark or a Europe of fatherlands. Economically it favours low taxes, deregulation and Mittelstand support while opposing the green transition, combustion-engine bans and what it calls ideologically driven energy policy. The party is socially conservative on family and gender, Atlanticist-sceptic on Ukraine aid and Russia sanctions, and vocally opposed to COVID-era mandates in retrospect. Its eastern associations lean völkisch and revisionist; its western economists lean liberal. Political scientists classify the AfD as radical right to far right, noting delegations that courts have found to pursue anti-constitutional aims, a judgement the party rejects as political persecution.

Voter demographics

The AfD and the heartland is eastern Germany, where it regularly polls first: Saxony, Thuringia, Brandenburg and Saxony-Anhalt, regions marked by lower wages, outmigration and scepticism toward Berlin elites. Its voters are disproportionately male — the gender gap reaches double digits — middle-aged, and concentrated among skilled workers, craftsmen and lower-middle employees. Education correlates negatively: the fewer formal qualifications, the higher the AfD share, though it also attracts protest votes from disillusioned former CDU and Left supporters. Young voters, especially young men in the east, have swung sharply to the party since 2024, while pensioners and university graduates in western cities remain resistant. Non-voters are a rich recruiting ground: the AfD mobilises previous abstainers with anti-establishment appeals. Ethnic German resettlers from the former Soviet Union over-index in its support; voters with a migrant background largely reject it.
