Watch whether the next round of releases confirms the average above 29.0% — a hold above that line would signal consolidation rather than a single-poll outlier, while a second straight quarterly gain would put rivals under severe strategic pressure.

Party profile

Chega: history, ideology and voters

A concise reference on Chega of Portugal — where it comes from, what it stands for, and who votes for it.

History

Chega (Enough) was founded in April 2019 by Andre Ventura, a former PSD municipal councillor, football pundit and television commentator who broke with the centre-right over corruption and Roma crime narratives. It entered parliament later that year with a single seat — Ventura himself — and the novelty of a radical-right deputy in a country that prided itself on immunity. The 2021 presidential race, in which Ventura took 11.9 percent and third place, proved the market; the 2022 snap election delivered 12 seats and the 2024 election a breakthrough of 50 seats and 18 percent, making Chega the third force and kingmaker of a hung parliament. The 2025 snap election confirmed the surge: around 23 percent and 60 seats, level with the Socialists, amid the Spinumviva scandal engulfing the AD government. Ventura and the formula — televised confrontation, anti-corruption crusades, Roma baiting and law-and-order maximalism — imported the European populist playbook into a party system that had resisted it longest. Municipal implantation through 2025 gave Chega councillors and local machines for the first time.

Ideology

Chega mixes national conservatism with strident anti-establishment messaging. It demands chemical castration for paedophiles, life sentences, Roma-specific policing plans, welfare conditionality and a parliamentary purge of corrupt elites, including cuts to deputies and privileges. Immigration, negligible until recently, became a flagship as arrivals from South Asia and Lusophone Africa grew: quotas, deportations and nationality restrictions. Economically the party began as flat-tax liberal under Ventura and the economist mentors, then drifted toward pension and wage populism to court workers. It is Atlanticist and pro-NATO, supportive of Ukraine, sceptical of EU federalism but not of membership, and culturally Catholic-traditionalist on abortion, euthanasia and gender. The 2020 convention and the flirtations with race-tinged rhetoric drew accusations of racism that Ventura deflects as anti-political-correctness. Analysts file Chega as populist radical right with personalist leadership, Southern-European style.

Voter demographics

Chega voters are angry suburbanites and small-town strivers: men, the middle-aged, small traders, police, construction workers and Algarve tourism staff squeezed by wages and housing. The party overperforms in the Lisbon periphery, Setubal, the Alentejo and the Algarve, and underperforms in Porto and the academic north. Education effects are stark: basic and secondary schooling predicts Chega; degrees predict the left or the liberal IL. Evangelical and traditional Catholic voters sympathise; young men radicalised on YouTube and TikTok form the shock troops. Former PSD voters supply the respectable wing, former abstainers the numbers. Women lag men by several points amid Ventura and the macho persona. Roma are the designated folk devil — and the rare community that votes against Chega unanimously.
