Brothers of Italy: history, ideology and voters

A concise reference on Brothers of Italy of Italy — where it comes from, what it stands for, and who votes for it.

History

Brothers of Italy (Fratelli d and Italia, FdI) was founded in December 2012 by Giorgia Meloni, Ignazio La Russa and Guido Crosetto as a split from Silvio Berlusconi and the People of Freedom, claiming the heritage of the Italian right without Berlusconi and the personalism. Its roots run through the Italian Social Movement (MSI), the post-fascist party dissolved in 1995, and its successor National Alliance, in which Meloni herself was a youth activist and minister. For years FdI was a small opposition force, polling around 4 percent in 2018 while Matteo Salvini and the League dominated the right. Meloni and the refusal to join Mario Draghi and the 2021 national-unity government proved decisive: as the only opposition party, FdI absorbed discontented right-wing voters and surged to 26 percent in the September 2022 general election, becoming Italy and the largest party. Meloni became Italy and the first female prime minister, leading a coalition with the League and Forza Italia. In government the party has combined Atlanticist reliability on Ukraine with domestic cultural conservatism, and it led the Italian right into the 2024 European elections as the dominant force.

Ideology

Brothers of Italy describes itself as national-conservative, organised around God, fatherland and family. It defends traditional family structures, opposes surrogacy and what it calls gender ideology in schools, and promotes higher birth rates through family subsidies. On immigration it demands naval blockades against irregular crossings, offshore processing of asylum claims and repatriation agreements with North African states. Economically the party is moderately statist: supportive of small business, the self-employed and Made in Italy, sympathetic to flat-tax proposals but pragmatic in office about budgets and EU fiscal rules. On Europe it has moved from hard euroscepticism to reformist engagement, seeking to change EU rules on migration and green policy from within while maintaining good relations with Brussels. Foreign policy under Meloni has been firmly Atlanticist, backing Ukraine and NATO, which reassured markets and allies. Critics note the party and the unresolved relationship with fascist symbolism; Meloni condemns totalitarianism while refusing the label anti-fascist, a ambiguity scholars continue to debate.

Voter demographics

FdI voters concentrate in central and southern Italy — Lazio, Campania, Puglia and Sicily — with historic strength in Rome, where MSI-era subcultures survived. The electorate blends lower-middle-class voters, small traders, artisans and public-sector employees with a growing share of young voters attracted by Meloni and the direct communication style. Women support the party at roughly the same rate as men, unusual for the radical right and partly credited to Meloni and the leadership. The party polls well among voters with secondary education and struggles relatively among university graduates and the industrial working class of the northern League heartlands. Pensioners worried about security and cultural change are over-represented, as are voters in small towns and suburbs rather than metropolitan centres. Turnout loyalty is high: FdI supporters, mobilised by identity and the sense of a historic breakthrough, vote consistently, giving the party an efficient vote-to-seat conversion under Italy and the mixed electoral system.
