Republican Party of Chile: history, ideology and voters

A concise reference on Republican Party of Chile of Chile — where it comes from, what it stands for, and who votes for it.

History

The Republican Party of Chile (Partido Republicano, PLR) was founded in June 2019 by Jose Antonio Kast — the son of a German Wehrmacht veteran turned businessman — after his 2017 independent presidential run showed a market to the right of the UDI. Kast and the 2017 8 percent became 28 percent in the November 2021 first round, topping the right before losing the run-off to Gabriel Boric 44-56. The party then led the 2023 constitutional-council elections with 35 percent, drafting a conservative charter that voters rejected that December — a defeat that dented Kast and the inevitability narrative. Through municipal and regional contests the Republicans built mayoral beachheads while fending off the Social Christian split. Kast and the third presidential bid in 2025, fronted on crime, immigration and economic stagnation themes, kept him competitive in a fragmented field against the Chile Vamos successor candidacies. By 2026 the PLR polled in the low teens nationally, entrenched as the Chilean right and the pole with coalition leverage over any future right-wing government. Kast and the 2026 municipal apparatus, built methodically commune by commune, gave the Republicans the territorial depth their presidential campaigns had lacked.

Ideology

Republican ideology is Pinochet-nostalgic conservatism updated for the crime wave: God, fatherland, family and the free market of the Chicago Boys. It demands border militarisation against Venezuelan migration, deportations, lower age of criminal responsibility, an empowered Carabineros and pardons for aging military prisoners framed as reconciliation. Economically it preaches AFP pension defence, tax cuts and deregulation against Boric and the statist reforms. Socially it opposes abortion liberalisation, gender-identity laws and comprehensive sex education, defending confessional schooling. The party admires the 1980 constitution and the economic model while distancing in language from dictatorship-era crimes. Foreign policy aligns with the US right and Bukele-style security exports. Scholars place it as the Chilean radical right: authoritarian-nostalgic, neoliberal and evangelical-adjacent. On pensions it defends individual capitalisation against solidarity-pillar reforms, aligning retirees and young contributors in a single bloc.

Voter demographics

Republican voters are evangelicals, retirees of the armed forces, La Reina-Las Condes conservatives, southern farmers and northern mining-town security voters. Men, older voters and the religious right over-index; Mapuche-conflict zones in Araucania deliver striking scores. The party wins among private-sector employees fearful of crime and among Venezuelan-legal-migrant employers paradoxically demanding closed doors behind them. Youth, students, feminists, public-sector teachers and Santiago and the cultural left reject it. Former UDI voters are the main reservoir; former abstainers mobilised by fear complete the base. Turnout with compulsory voting (reintroduced) expanded the Republican electorate by forcing peripheral conservatives to the polls. Pentecostal pastors in La Pintana and Puente Alto function as electoral brokers, delivering Sunday congregations to Monday polls.
