Watch whether the next round of releases confirms the average above 18.8% — a hold above that line would signal consolidation rather than a single-poll outlier, while a second straight quarterly gain would put rivals under severe strategic pressure.

Key issues & ideology

Anti-immigrationNational ConservatismEconomic LiberalismRight-Wing PopulismAtlanticism

Vox ideology is Spanish nationalist centralism: suspension of Catalan and Basque autonomy, outlawing separatist parties, recentralising education and health, and celebrating Hispanic heritage including the Reconquista. Immigration policy demands deportations, walls at Ceuta and Melilla, and the end of pull-factor regularisations; Islamist mosques funded from abroad would be closed.

Voters asking "who is Vox?" or "what does Vox stand for?" find the party classified here as anti-immigration, national conservatism, economic liberalism — positioning that explains both its ceiling near 18.8% and where further growth must come from.

Party profile

Vox: history, ideology and voters

A concise reference on Vox of Spain — where it comes from, what it stands for, and who votes for it.

History

Vox was founded in December 2013 by PP dissidents — Alejo Vidal-Quadras, Jose Antonio Ortega Lara — as a centralist, economically liberal splinter accusing Mariano Rajoy of betraying conservative principles on taxes, separatism and ETA. It languished below one percent until the Catalan independence crisis of 2017 gave Santiago Abascal, leader since 2014, the cause his party needed: the defence of Spanish unity. Entering the Andalusian parliament in December 2018, Vox exploded nationally to 10.3 percent in April 2019 and 15.1 percent (52 seats, third force) in November 2019. It sustained the PP from outside in Madrid, Murcia, Andalusia and Castilla y Leon, then entered its first regional governments with the PP after the May 2023 elections — coalitions that collapsed in 2024 over migrant-minor redistribution. The July 2023 general election disappointed expectations (12.4 percent) as the PP absorbed useful votes, and the rise of Alvise Perez and the Se Acabo La Fiesta microparty nibbled its protest flank. Through 2025-26 Vox polled in the mid-teens, entrenched as Spain and the third force but capped by the PP and the recovery.

Ideology

Vox ideology is Spanish nationalist centralism: suspension of Catalan and Basque autonomy, outlawing separatist parties, recentralising education and health, and celebrating Hispanic heritage including the Reconquista. Immigration policy demands deportations, walls at Ceuta and Melilla, and the end of pull-factor regularisations; Islamist mosques funded from abroad would be closed. Economically the party began as radical liberal (flat tax, ministry closures) and retains tax-cutting zeal with growing workerist rhetoric. It is anti-feminist on gender-violence law (demanding a neutral domestic-violence statute), pro-life, pro-bullfighting and hunting, climate-sceptic and hostile to Agenda 2030. Atlanticist and pro-Israel abroad, it cultivates Latin American anti-socialist alliances and Meloni-Orban networks in Europe. Scholars place Vox as the first successful radical-right party of post-Franco Spain: national-Catholic in culture, neoliberal in economics, populist in style.

Voter demographics

Vox voters are young men, soldiers, police, small farmers and conservative professionals in Madrid, Murcia, Andalusia and the Valencian interior. It dominates among under-35 males — the only major party with such a profile — and among voters radicalised by the Catalan procés. Practising Catholics, bullfighting aficionados and hunting communities over-index; teachers, cultural workers and Catalan and Basque speakers reject it overwhelmingly. The party wins middle incomes rather than the poor: its electorate is more aspirational-suburban than marginal. Women lag men substantially amid feminist backlash framing. Former PP voters are the main supply, with Ciudadanos and the orphans as reinforcements. Abstentionist right-wingers reactivated by identity panic complete the coalition — a base that surges on territorial crisis and subsides when the PP looks like a winning useful vote.
